Joseph C. Rutledge
Bio: Joe Rutledge, M.D. is a pediatric pathologist at Seattle Children’s Hospital and Professor of Laboratory Medicine at the University of Washington. He graduated from Rhodes College and Vanderbilt Medical School prior to a residency in Seattle. He returned to Seattle after 8 years at UT Southwestern and Children’s Medical Center. He has published in most areas of pediatric pathology and laboratory medicine and is a past president of the Society of Pediatric Pathology. Dr. Rutledge migrated from birth defects research to spend time in laboratory administration. During his tenure as medical director of laboratories, he partnered with the hospital to bring the Toyota Production System to both. Those activities spurred a natural overlapping interest in quality fueled by membership on the CAP ISO 15189 committee. He serves as deputy Commissioner for Pediatric Laboratories in the College of American Pathologists’ Laboratory Accreditation Program. He has consulted on Lean and quality in the US and abroad. Of late he has worked to bring ISO 9001 certification via DNV to the hospital.
